Filmmaker Aditya Dhar has attributed the success of his work to Ram Gopal Varma's groundbreaking approach to cinema. This acknowledgment came in response to Varma's reflections on his influence on a generation of directors.
Earlier, a post highlighted the impact of Varma's films on prominent directors such as SS Rajamouli, Sandeep Reddy Vanga, and Aditya Dhar. Varma, known for his raw and impactful action dramas like 'Satya', 'Siva', 'Company', and 'Sarkar', responded on X (formerly Twitter) with a touch of self-deprecating humor. He likened the situation to a soap commercial where the model becomes more famous than the product itself. Varma questioned when he, the inspirer, would achieve the same level of recognition as those he inspired.
Dhar then responded, directly addressing Varma by saying that Varma took risks during a time when there were no established formulas for success. Dhar stated that 'Dhurandhar' was able to succeed because Varma had first paved the way. He emphasized that some paths create a legacy rather than immediate praise.
Dhar had previously expressed his long-held admiration for Varma, recounting his arrival in Mumbai with the aspiration of collaborating with him. While that specific dream didn't materialize, Dhar acknowledged that he indirectly absorbed Varma's cinematic philosophy. He noted that Varma's films didn't just teach him filmmaking techniques but also how to think boldly and unconventionally.
He further lauded RGV as a director who infused Indian cinema with a sense of fearlessness and vitality. Dhar believes that if 'Dhurandhar' possesses even a trace of those qualities, it's due to the influence of Varma's films during its creation.
'Dhurandhar' is a story about Hamza, an Indian spy who goes undercover in Pakistan to join Rehman Dakait's group. The film draws inspiration from real events, including the 2001 Parliament attack and the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, giving viewers a look into the complexities of the India-Pakistan conflict. The movie stars Akshaye Khanna, R Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, Sara Arjun, and Rakesh Bedi. Its second installment is slated for release on March 19, 2026.
