Robin Uthappa believes MS Dhoni's IPL career will conclude in 2026, citing CSK's youth-oriented draft strategy as a sign of Dhoni's transition to a mentor role.
Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa suggests that MS Dhoni's time as a player in the Indian Premier League may be coming to an end, possibly after the 2026 season. Uthappa's comments come after observing the Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) recent auction strategy, which heavily favored investing in younger players, signaling a potential shift for Dhoni into a mentoring position.
CSK's approach at the auction seems to reinforce this idea. Of the Rs 41 crore spent on nine players, a significant Rs 28.4 crore, almost 60% of their total budget, went to just two uncapped, young players. Kartik Sharma, a teenage wicketkeeper-batsman, was acquired for Rs 14.20 crore, and Prashant Veer, a 20-year-old left-arm spin all-rounder, was brought in for a similar price. These acquisitions instantly made them among the most expensive uncapped players in IPL history.
Uthappa believes this aggressive backing of young talent indicates how Dhoni's role within the franchise is changing. He stated that the team is focused on developing and retaining talent. Uthappa also pondered the benefits of developing another player like Ravindra Jadeja with the guidance of MS Dhoni, alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad's captaincy.
Previously, CSK traded Ravindra Jadeja to Rajasthan Royals and acquired middle-order batsman Sarfaraz Khan and leg-spinner Rahul Chahar, who are considered to be in their prime. The addition of Sanju Samson further supports the notion of a succession plan, where Dhoni is expected to gradually reduce his on-field responsibilities. Uthappa believes Dhoni will transition into a mentor-cum-player role this year, already viewing things from that perspective.
Dhoni's retirement has been a recurring topic in the IPL. Even after leading CSK to victory in 2023, he chose to continue playing, driven by a desire to give fans a proper farewell. That said, the reality is a bit more complicated. with CSK's recent focus on Ruturaj Gaikwad and heavy investment in youth, the franchise seems to be preparing for the future without 'Captain Cool' on the field, although he will likely still be involved with the team.
