New Zealand's Devon Conway achieved a rare feat in Test cricket, becoming the first from his nation to score a double century and a century in the same match against the West Indies.
Devon Conway etched his name into New Zealand cricket lore at Bay Oval with a remarkable display against the West Indies. In the third Test, the left-handed batsman accomplished something no other New Zealander had ever done: scoring both a double-century and a century in the same Test match.
Conway's initial innings saw him amass a magnificent 227 runs. He then followed up with a composed 100 in the second innings, reaching the milestone just before tea on the fourth day of play. This performance places him among an extremely select group of international cricketers.
Only nine other players have previously achieved this combination of scores in a single Test, including legendary names like Brian Lara, Graham Gooch, Kumar Sangakkara, Marnus Labuschagne, and Shubman Gill. His impressive first-innings total was crucial to New Zealand's dominant position, helping them reach 575 for 8. While the West Indies showed some fight in their response, scoring 420, they were ultimately playing catch-up.
The century in the second innings was Conway's seventh in Test cricket, solidifying his place as a dependable run-scorer for New Zealand. The hosts went into the final Test with a 1-0 series lead, having drawn in Christchurch and won convincingly by nine wickets in Wellington. Conway's second innings came to an end shortly after tea when he was caught at deep mid-wicket by Jayden Seales off the bowling of Kavem Hodge, attempting a pull shot. Shortly after Conway's dismissal, Tom Latham also departed after reaching his century, with Hodge and Seales again combining. New Zealand, with Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra quickly approaching their half-centuries, declared and set the West Indies an imposing target of 462 for victory.
