Richard Davies and Faye Stevenson-Davies, from Wales, have won the lottery for a second time, defying odds of 24 trillion to one. They plan to keep working.
A couple from Wales has defied odds of 24 trillion to one by winning the lottery not just once, but twice. Richard Davies, 49, and his wife, Faye Stevenson-Davies, 43, claimed their second substantial prize from the United Kingdom’s National Lottery on Tuesday.
Stevenson-Davies, a mental health practitioner, said in a statement released by the National Lottery that they followed their gut feeling, despite knowing the odds were stacked against them. "We knew the odds of it happening again were outrageous," she said, "But we’re proof that if you believe, anything is possible."
The couple's first stroke of luck occurred in June 2018, when they won £1 million (approximately $1.3 million) in a EuroMillions Millionaire Maker game.
Even after their initial win, they continued purchasing lottery tickets, hoping for another win. Their persistence paid off, although their second win wasn't immediate. It took four consecutive draws to secure the jackpot.
Davies, who previously worked as a hairdresser and now works as a courier, explained that matching two numbers in the Lotto draw automatically enters you into a Lucky Dip for the subsequent game. This is how they managed to get into the drawing that led to their second £1 million win.
Despite their newfound wealth, both Davies and Stevenson-Davies intend to continue working. Davies will continue his courier job, even over the Christmas period, and Stevenson-Davies will continue providing mental health support to her clients, including on Christmas Day.
The couple is taking their time to decide how to spend their winnings. Davies noted that after their first win, they gifted cars, donated a minibus to the local rugby team, and helped friends and family. They are now considering how to best use their second windfall.
In the United States, there have also been instances of people winning the lottery multiple times. For example, in July, Paul Corcoran from Massachusetts won the Powerball twice in one night, taking home a total of $2 million.
