Bruno Fernandes' recent interview casts doubt on his Man United future, potentially creating a transfer headache for the club, along with Kobbie Mainoo's situation.
Manchester United may need to reassess their transfer strategy following surprising comments from their captain, Bruno Fernandes, regarding his future at Old Trafford.
Fernandes' recent statements have created uncertainty after he appeared to contradict his previous commitment to the club. This past summer, fans were relieved when Fernandes decided to stay, despite a lucrative offer from the Saudi Pro League. At that time, after discussions with his family, the United board, and manager Ruben Amorim, he chose to remain with the team. Since then, he has contributed five goals and seven assists this season. In October, he confirmed that talks with the club's leadership were key to his decision.
That said, the reality is a bit more complicated. in a recent interview with Portuguese media outlet Canal 11, Fernandes expressed feeling "hurt" by what he perceived as a lack of concern from United about potentially losing him. While United sources maintain that the board assured Fernandes he was a vital part of their future, this situation should serve as a warning as the next transfer window approaches.
Even if there has been a misunderstanding between Fernandes and the club, his ambition to play in Spain, Portugal, and Italy before retiring is clear, and he remains open to a move to Saudi Arabia. At 31, Fernandes isn't nearing retirement, but he may need to act quickly to fulfill these aspirations.
There's a growing sense that Fernandes' time at United might be ending. He has been a valuable player for the club and deserves a proper send-off. That said, the reality is a bit more complicated. United must prioritize their long-term planning. Whether Fernandes leaves at the end of this season or in 2027 when his contract expires, the club needs a succession plan.
Initially, Kobbie Mainoo seemed like the natural successor. As an academy graduate with immense potential, he was expected to fill the void Fernandes might leave. But after a challenging 2025/26 season, Mainoo's development has stalled. He requested a loan move during the summer, which was denied, and his opportunities have since diminished. He hasn't started a Premier League match this season, jeopardizing his chances of playing in the World Cup.
United could potentially face next season without both Fernandes and Mainoo, which should be a serious concern for the club. They appear to be sleepwalking towards losing two key midfielders and need to act decisively to retain them.
While it might be difficult to salvage both situations, Amorim needs to integrate Mainoo more effectively to prevent him from seeking opportunities elsewhere. Mainoo needs reassurance about his future at the club, requiring significant changes before the season's end.
Fernandes' interview underscores the urgency for United to consider life after their captain and prepare accordingly. The prospect of potentially losing both Fernandes and Mainoo next season should be a major concern for the recruitment team.
