Bhaichung Bhutia expresses disappointment over the chaotic scenes at Lionel Messi's event in Kolkata, urging organizers to prevent future occurrences.
Former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia has voiced his disappointment regarding the chaotic scenes that unfolded at the Kolkata stadium event featuring Lionel Messi. Bhutia stated on Saturday, December 13, 2025, that organizers must ensure such incidents are avoided in the future to protect the country's image.
Bhutia spoke to reporters at Raipur airport after returning from Jagdalpur, where he attended the closing ceremony of the Bastar Olympic 2025.
When questioned about the situation at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, Bhutia said, "It is a bit disappointing because I heard that around 80,000 fans turned up. Everybody loves Messi, but genuine fans did not really get to see him, which is very unfortunate."
He expressed his hope that the organizers would learn from the experience and prevent similar situations from happening again. "It also spoils the country's name," he added.
In a separate video interview with PTI, Bhutia acknowledged that while Messi's visit was a positive initiative, it was negatively impacted by poor organization, which prevented true fans from seeing their idol.
"I think it was a very good visit, but unfortunately things did not go according to plan. I think the organisers were under huge pressure. What we saw and heard was that a lot of unwanted VIPs came to the stadium and surrounded Messi, while the genuine fans did not get to see him. I hope this kind of incident does not happen," Bhutia stated. He emphasized that organizers must prioritize genuine fans' access to their heroes, as fans are understandably upset when they miss out.
