Bengaluru's Pink Line metro project anticipates launching its elevated section by May 2026, with the complete line operational by the end of the year.
Bengaluru's Namma Metro Pink Line is approaching its operational phase after experiencing several deadline extensions. The first six-coach prototype train is scheduled to arrive at Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) facilities this week, marking the start of essential testing and safety evaluations before the line can be commissioned.
Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) manufactured the prototype at its Bengaluru plant. Although initially planned for mid-October, the rollout occurred in December. This train will now serve as the standard reference for all future Pink Line trains.
Upon arrival, the prototype will undergo oscillation trials. These key safety tests, conducted on at least a 5km track segment, will evaluate derailment potential, weight distribution, and overall stability at speeds exceeding the intended operational limit by 10 percent. These trials are crucial to ensure passenger safety.
Following successful trials, BMRCL will submit comprehensive reports to the Railway Board. Subsequently, the project requires approvals from the Ministry of Railways and the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), culminating in final authorization from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS).
Under a Rs 3,000-crore agreement, BEML is contracted to supply 318 standard-gauge metro cars for both the Pink and Blue Lines. The agreement encompasses design, engineering, manufacturing, and comprehensive maintenance support for up to 15 years.
The Pink Line trains will feature communication-based train control (CBTC) technology, enabling fully automated, driverless operation. This advanced system enhances train frequency, boosts safety, and improves overall operational efficiency for Bengaluru’s expanding metro system.
The 7.5km elevated section of the Pink Line, running between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere, is slated to open first. BMRCL aims to commission this segment by May 2026.
The remaining 13km underground section, connecting Dairy Circle and Nagawara, involves intricate tunnelling and station construction. BMRCL has set a target of the end of 2026 for the completion and commissioning of this portion of the Pink Line.
