Ben Stokes' frustration boiled over after Mitchell Starc dismissed him for the 12th time in Test matches. Read how the England captain reacted to his dismissal.
Ben Stokes' valiant innings of 83 runs was cut short by Mitchell Starc in the Adelaide Test, triggering a visible display of frustration from the England captain. Stokes, who had formed a solid 106-run partnership with Jofra Archer, was dismissed by Starc for the 12th time in his Test career.
The dismissal occurred on the first ball of the 85th over. Starc's inswinging delivery proved too good for Stokes, who misjudged the movement and attempted a shot on the off-side. A significant gap between bat and pad allowed the ball to crash into the stumps.
Visibly upset, the 34-year-old Stokes reacted with immediate anger, tossing his bat and expressing his frustration aloud as he walked back to the dressing room.
Starc's dismissal of Stokes marked the 12th time he has achieved this feat in Test matches. This places him second on the list of bowlers who have dismissed Stokes most often, only behind Ravichandran Ashwin, who has dismissed him 13 times.
Stokes had provided crucial stability to the England innings, scoring 83 runs from 198 balls, including eight boundaries. He curbed his aggressive style to grind out runs and frustrate the Australian bowlers. His innings was instrumental in helping England reduce Australia's first-innings lead. That said, the reality is a bit more complicated. England were eventually bowled out for 286, conceding a lead of 85 runs after Scott Boland dismissed Jofra Archer for 61. England must win the Adelaide Test to keep their hopes of regaining the Ashes alive, having lost the first two matches of the series.
