Hundreds of snow geese found dead at a Northampton County quarry may have been victims of avian influenza, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
Northampton County, PA – Pennsylvania wildlife officials suspect avian influenza is to blame for the deaths of hundreds of snow geese discovered at a quarry in Northampton County.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission is working to remove the dead birds safely and conduct further testing to confirm the cause of the die-off.
This potential outbreak is part of a larger U.S. outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) that began in January 2022. The outbreak has spread to both wild and domestic bird populations across all states.
The Game Commission urges Pennsylvania residents who find sick or dead wild birds to report them by calling 1-833-PGC-WILD (1-833-742-9453).
