Following the Bondi Beach attack, Australia's PM announces new measures targeting hate speech and radicalization, including visa restrictions and increased penalties.
In response to the recent deadly attack at Bondi Beach, Australia will implement stricter measures to combat hate speech. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the new initiatives on Thursday, focusing on antisemitism and aiming to dismantle the spread of hate, division, and radicalization.
The announcement follows Sunday's attack where two gunmen opened fire on a Hanukkah celebration at the beach, resulting in the deaths of 15 people, including a 10-year-old girl. Authorities have indicated the attackers were motivated by antisemitism inspired by the Islamic State.
Albanese stated at a press conference that the government will draft legislation targeting hate speech and those who promote it. The planned measures include targeting preachers who incite violence and creating a list of organizations with leaders who promote violence or racial hatred. Increased penalties for hate speech offenses are also part of the proposal.
Furthermore, the home affairs minister will receive expanded authority to deny or revoke visas for individuals deemed likely to spread hate and division within Australia, according to Albanese.
