The NBA's growing relationship with the UAE, including tournaments & sponsorships, is under scrutiny as the UAE faces accusations of fueling conflict in Sudan.
As violence escalates in Sudan, with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) accused of atrocities in the western city, the NBA's ties to the United Arab Emirates are drawing increased scrutiny. The RSF, a paramilitary group, stands accused of mass executions, rapes, and ethnic cleansing, allegedly using weapons supplied by the UAE.
Meanwhile, the NBA's partnership with the UAE is expanding. This includes the Emirates NBA Cup, an in-season tournament sponsored by the UAE. The league also holds preseason games in Abu Dhabi and has a sponsorship deal with Emirates airlines. Further cementing the relationship, plans are underway for a new NBA Global Academy at NYU's Abu Dhabi campus.
Looking ahead, the NBA is reportedly considering Abu Dhabi's investment in a potential NBA-branded European league, possibly launching in 2027. These deals provide the NBA with a significant investor, while the UAE gains legitimacy and influence through its association with the popular sports league.
That said, the reality is a bit more complicated. this partnership faces criticism due to accusations against the UAE of contributing to the conflict in Sudan. The NBA maintains that it consults with the U.S. government regarding its involvement with the UAE. The league emphasizes its commitment to growing the sport in the Middle East, citing a long history of basketball in the region. Activities include bringing live games to fans and teaching basketball fundamentals to young people.
