A leak of internal Apple code reveals details about the upcoming 'HomePad' smart home device, including its A18 chip, Face ID, and release timeframe.

Details about Apple's much-anticipated smart home device, often referred to as the HomePad, have surfaced thanks to a new leak.

Macworld obtained what they described as "leaked internal Apple code," which contained several references to the unreleased gadget. Although the code didn't explicitly mention the name 'HomePad,' the moniker remains a strong possibility.

The leaked information, found within a pre-release build of iOS 26, identifies the smart home hub by the codename J490. The code suggests the device will be powered by Apple's A18 chip and feature a front-facing, ultra-wide camera with Center Stage. The camera's video recording capability will be capped at 1080p, similar to the cameras found in current iPad and Mac models.

Potentially more significant is the inclusion of Face ID biometrics. This feature could allow the device to recognize different users and automatically adjust profiles based on who is interacting with it.

Apple Intelligence is also expected to be integrated, including an enhanced version of Siri designed for more natural and fluid conversations.

The code indicates a 2026 release for the device, although earlier rumors had suggested a launch as early as next spring.

Macworld also reported discovering references to another, previously unknown smart home product, codenamed J229. Specifics are scarce, but it appears to include multiple sensors and a built-in camera. Notably, this device is identified as an accessory rather than a standalone product.

Previously, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple is developing an in-home security camera to work with the smart home hub, as well as a smart doorbell equipped with facial recognition. The J229 device could potentially be one of these, although Gurman suggested it's unlikely to appear before the end of next year at the earliest.
