A look at the Apple AirPods Max in 2025. Are these noise-canceling headphones still a good purchase five years after their initial release?
The Apple AirPods Max reached their fifth anniversary on December 15, 2025. While Apple gave them a minor refresh in September 2024, the question remains: are they still a worthwhile purchase?
The 2024 update swapped the Lightning connector for USB-C, enabling USB-C audio. This allows for a direct digital connection to computers, smartphones, and other devices using a USB-C cable. Some new colors were also introduced at that time.
Beyond the USB-C update and new colors, the AirPods Max haven't seen any significant changes. Notably, they still use the H1 chip, while newer Apple audio devices have moved on to the more powerful H2. The H2 chip, present in the AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2 & 3, and Beats Powerbeats Pro 2, brings features like improved noise cancellation, enhanced transparency mode, Adaptive Audio, and Conversation Awareness (which automatically lowers the volume when you speak).
Much of what was true in the original 2020 review remains accurate, especially regarding the design, fit, sound quality, and overall performance. That said, the reality is a bit more complicated. the competitive landscape has shifted. Sony has released two upgrades to its flagship 1000X series, culminating in the WH-1000XM6 (a CNET Editors' Choice). Bose also launched its QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen) headphones in 2025. Both the Sony and Bose offerings now outperform the AirPods Max in noise cancellation and weigh less.
The AirPods Max still provide very good noise cancellation, excellent sound, and a premium build. They also retain appealing features for Apple users, such as automatic device switching and spatial audio with head tracking. The addition of USB-C audio is welcome, although the $39 USB-C to 3.5mm cable required for in-flight entertainment systems remains an annoyance. The included case also remains unchanged, which many find inadequate for headphones in this price range.
With a typical selling price around $449, the AirPods Max compete directly with the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen). While it's hard to definitively say the AirPods Max are superior, their sound quality is comparable, and they boast a more premium design with stainless steel and aluminum construction.
If a new AirPods Max model with the H2 or even rumored H3 chip were imminent in 2026, a recommendation to wait would be easy. That said, the reality is a bit more complicated. current information suggests Apple is prioritizing its AirPods earbuds for upgrades in 2026, potentially delaying a full-size AirPods Max refresh for several years. While this isn't guaranteed, it's the current expectation based on sources familiar with Apple's plans.
Originally priced at $549, the AirPods Max raised eyebrows with their cost and unusual case. That said, the reality is a bit more complicated. strong initial sales and long wait times indicated significant demand. Ultimately, the value proposition depends on individual needs and preferences. These headphones offer excellent sound, solid wireless connectivity, and arguably top-tier noise cancellation.
Compared to competitors like the Sony WH-1000XM4 and Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, the AirPods Max deliver a high-end experience. While audiophiles often prefer wired headphones for optimal sound purity, the AirPods Max aim to bridge the gap with a combination of wireless convenience and impressive audio fidelity.
