India's electric two-wheeler market is losing momentum, with sales growth slowing. Meanwhile, petrol-powered models are demonstrating surprising stability.
After several years of growth, electric two-wheeler sales in India are faltering, suggesting the boom may be over. Initial projections anticipated EVs would soon overtake traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles on city streets.
That said, the reality is a bit more complicated. recent sales figures paint a different picture. The slowdown, initially dismissed as temporary, appears to be a sustained trend. The electric two-wheeler market is not just slowing, but in some areas, retracting.
This contrasts sharply with the overall two-wheeler market. In November 2025, total two-wheeler sales, dominated by petrol-powered models, reached 2.52 million units. While this represents a 3.94% decrease from 2024, the ICE segment demonstrates stability that the EV sector currently lacks.
Legacy manufacturers continue to lead the market. Hero MotoCorp remains the top seller, followed by Honda and TVS. This indicates consistent demand for petrol-based vehicles, even after the festive season surge subsided. Experts suggest that while EVs were expected to disrupt ICE dominance, the ICE market has proven more resilient and predictable.
