Following Pakistan's ban of Ranveer Singh's 'Dhurandhar,' a film about Lyari is in development. 'Dhurandhar' continues its box office domination.
Pakistan has announced plans for its own film centered on Lyari, a neighborhood in Karachi, after banning the Ranveer Singh film "Dhurandhar." Sindh Information Department revealed the project, titled "Mera Lyari," on X, stating its aim to present an "authentic story" of the area.
The department's post criticized what it described as "Indian propaganda" against Lyari, asserting that the area represents culture, peace, and resilience, not violence. The release of "Mera Lyari" is scheduled for January 2026. The film will reportedly focus on the community's culture, resilience, and daily life, rather than focusing on crime.
Meanwhile, "Dhurandhar," directed by Aditya Dhar, continues to break box office records. The film has become Ranveer Singh's highest-grossing movie to date, performing exceptionally well both in India and overseas, particularly in North America.
In India, "Dhurandhar" has grossed a net of Rs 351.75 crore, surpassing Singh's previous top-grossing film, "Padmaavat," which earned Rs 302.15 crore. The movie earned Rs 28 crore on its first Friday and Rs 207.25 crore during its opening week, maintaining strong momentum.
During its second week, "Dhurandhar" earned Rs 32 crore on its second Friday, setting an industry record for 2025. By the end of its second weekend, the film had surpassed Rs 350 crore domestically. Overseas, the movie registered the highest-ever second Friday collection for an Indian film in North America, exceeding the record previously held by "Baahubali 2: The Conclusion." It has also become the highest-grossing Indian film of 2025 in North America, outperforming Rajinikanth’s "Coolie."
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh has lauded the film's performance, describing its collections as "rule-breaking" and attributing its widespread appeal to Aditya Dhar's storytelling and the film's scale. He also highlighted the blockbuster's importance for Ranveer Singh, marking a strong comeback after a quieter period.
"Dhurandhar" features a large ensemble cast, including Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, R Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt, Sara Arjun, Rakesh Bedi, and Gaurav Gera.
