Ongoing shortages in RAM supply could lead to a shift in laptop configurations, with analysts predicting that 8GB of RAM may once again become the standard for mid-range models. Facing high memory costs, manufacturers are reportedly adjusting designs and pricing strategies to maintain both inventory levels and profit margins.
TrendForce, a market analysis firm, anticipates RAM prices will surge again in the first quarter of 2026. This increase is expected to put pressure on both smartphone and laptop manufacturers, potentially forcing them to either raise prices or reduce the memory capacity of their devices. Given that raising prices could alienate budget-conscious buyers, manufacturers may lean toward reducing memory in some models.
While mid-range laptops will likely still offer both 8GB and 16GB options, TrendForce suggests that shipments are trending towards the 8GB configuration. Consumers might find themselves paying the same price for an 8GB laptop that they would have paid for a 16GB model previously. The firm also suggests that high-end devices will focus on 16GB RAM, a step down from previous expectations of potentially reaching 64GB.
Entry-level laptops are expected to remain at 8GB of RAM, as further reductions would likely result in unacceptable performance. Windows 11, for example, requires a minimum of 4GB of RAM, leaving minimal capacity for applications and browsers, which are known for consuming significant memory. If reducing memory is not viable for these entry-level models, price increases are anticipated. TrendForce believes this will also affect high-end ultra-thin notebooks, where soldered DRAM limits cost-cutting options due to design constraints.
Memory represents a significant portion of the bill of materials (BOM) cost for consumer devices, making this situation almost inevitable. TrendForce anticipates that even Apple, with its higher profit margins, will likely increase iPhone prices in the first quarter of 2026. Low-end smartphones are expected to be particularly affected, with base models potentially reverting to 4GB of RAM in 2026.
TrendForce forecasts significant price fluctuations in the PC market by the second quarter of 2026. While current prices may be stable due to existing inventory, adjustments are expected in the medium and long term. Should this trend persist, software developers might need to optimize their applications to use less memory. Many industry experts believe that this is just the beginning of a challenging period, with conditions expected to worsen before improvements are seen.
