Fifty Catholics who were martyred by the Nazis have been beatified in France. The beatification ceremonies occurred during Masses in France and Spain.
Two Masses, one in Jaen, Spain, and another at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, were held Saturday, December 13, to beatify individuals who died for their Christian faith during times of persecution.
During the ceremony in Spain, 124 martyrs of the Spanish Civil War were beatified. Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, presided over the event.
The Jaen Diocese stated that these individuals sacrificed their lives "for the love of Christ." Their example continues to inspire the faith of the community.
The selection of the 124 martyrs involved research dating back to the 1990s and early 2000s. According to Andres Najera, Delegate for the Cause of the Saints, the inquiry aimed to confirm that they were killed solely because of their faith, "and not for other motives."
Najera added, "In a violent and aggressive world, with a lack of respect for ideologies and beliefs, the 124 [Servants of God] made a difference by affirming that violence is not the solution; the answer comes from forgiveness, and this is the lesson that the Gospel gives us. The world needs goodness."
The individuals from the Jaén diocese were killed at different times and locations during the Spanish Civil War, a period marked by anti-Catholic persecution.
