This year brought remarkable cosmic breakthroughs, and these are the most significant space discoveries that captured the attention of scientists in 2025.
2025 brought us some unusual discoveries in space and science. From planets to comets, NASA and ISRO have found new celestial bodies this year that are definitely worth studying. Just in case you missed them, here are five major discoveries that scientists observed in 2025.
A significant meteor shower was observed on the night of May 5, 2025. The meteors entered Earth's atmosphere at a speed of 65.4 km/s. Almost 50 meteors per minute were visible during the peak of the shower. Though the event was observed worldwide, it was most prominent in the Southern Hemisphere (Australia, Indonesia) and near the equator.
The third interstellar object, referred to as 3I/ATLAS, was discovered on July 1, 2025, by NASA's ATLAS survey. This is not just a regular comet; it was observed continually changing its colour and speed.
The "Golden Comet" is formally referred to as Comet C/2025 K1 (ATLAS). Unlike typical comets that glow green or blue under sunlight, this visitor displayed unique red, brown, and golden hues. Astronomer Dan Bartlett observed the comet from June Lake, California. Although it was not expected to survive its close approach to the Sun, it did survive and exhibited these unique color shifts.
A small asteroid appeared in 2025 as Earth’s new cosmic partner. Referred to as a "quasi-moon" or "mini-moon," it was named 2025 PN7. It is predicted to orbit near Earth for the next 50 years. The movement of this asteroid is very similar to Earth's orbit around the Sun.
On April 7, 2025 Uranus passed in front of a distant star in an event called a stellar occultation. This alignment was visible from Western North America. During the occultation, the starlight was gradually dimmed by Uranus' atmosphere before being completely blocked. The process reversed as the star reappeared.
