Australian police conducted an operation in Sydney after the Bondi Beach attack, investigating a possible new plot. No immediate link confirmed.
Four days after the Bondi Beach terror attack, Australian police executed a significant operation in a Sydney suburb following intelligence suggesting a potential new plot. Heavily armed officers were involved, with reports indicating they rammed a car and briefly detained several men.
The New South Wales police force released a statement confirming that tactical teams intercepted two vehicles based on information about a possible planned violent act. The operation took place in Liverpool, a suburb southwest of Sydney, approximately 30 minutes by car from Bondi Beach. Authorities stated that they have not yet found any connection to the ongoing investigation into the Bondi terror attack.
According to Australian news outlets such as NewsWire and The Australian, the individuals intercepted were believed to be traveling from Melbourne, Victoria – a city almost 550 miles away – with a possible destination of Bondi. While no arrests were immediately announced, photos from the scene depicted men seated on the ground while officers were present. Police confirmed that seven men were assisting them with their inquiries.
Authorities reassured the public that there was no current threat and that the operation had concluded. NewsWire quoted an unnamed witness who described the scene as "frightening to see so many police with huge weapons in the area" so soon after the Bondi attack.
Although police have not established a direct link to the Bondi Beach shooting, Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett stated earlier on Thursday that more raids were expected in the aftermath of the terror attack. The attack resulted in the deaths of 15 people who were attending a Hanukkah celebration.
"In the coming days, the New South Wales Joint Counter Terrorism Team will execute further search warrants to support our investigation," Barrett said. "There is a lot of material to be examined, and the AFP continues to work with both domestic and international partners to build a more complete picture of the movements and who the alleged offenders had contact with, both in Australia and offshore."
