3I/ATLAS: Harvard Astrophysicist Avi Loeb’s List Of Dos & Don'ts If Exocomet Turns Out To Be Alien Space Probe

👽 Prof Loeb charts 15 guiding principles to take an ETI threat on Earth 🌍

3I/ATLAS was discovered on July 01, 2025 by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) that has five 0.5 meter telescopes to keep an eye on the sky. The near-absence of a cometary tail on the interstellar object excited the believers that this must be it! The first-ever interstellar contact from beyond our own solar system’s backyard?
So far the exocomet has kept everyone guessing, with mainstream scientists ruling out the possibility of it possessing any technological characteristics. However, Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb has enlisted several anomalies (until this article the tally is 13) in the interstellar interloper. A handful of experts cautiously stay with Loeb’s speculation while trudging along the fence. NASA’s release of images from its various assets, including the HiRISE cam aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), disappointed the lay.

There’s still plenty of scope for researchers to get a good view of the interstellar guest when it will be the closest to Earth on December 19 at 1.8 AU (astronomical unit) or about 270 million kilometers. Another opportunity will be for probes near Jupiter, when 3I/ATLAS will be closest to the gas giant.
Prof. Loeb, in one of his previous blogs, remarked that if at all the comet is a spaceship, then it would send probes into the jovian atmosphere. In an earlier blog, he explored the possibility of such an event being a threat to mankind.
What would humanity do in an eventuality where a technologically superior malevolent race arrives? Or perhaps benevolent too? In the Medium write-up, the theoretical physicist lays out 15 principles. We shall look at some of the key principles:
A representative international committee will be appointed to communicate with the alien visitors, whether they possess biological intelligence or alien AI. The committee will employ the best AI tools available to humanity for the task of decoding alien messaging.
New astronomical observatories should be constructed as an alert system to future threats based on past experiences. An array of space-based interceptors should be installed in orbit around the Sun. The spacecraft closest to the path of an incoming alien device, identified in advance by the astronomical observatories, will attempt to intercept the visitor far from Earth.
Her further writes in the blog
Currently, humanity is not prepared for a potential threat from alien technology. The wake-up call from 3I/ATLAS might stir us in the right direction.
Hope they come in peace. Shalom!
