The IPL on Tuesday shortlisted 359 players for the upcoming mini auction slated to be held in Abu Dhabi.
Days before the IPL mini-auction, the BCCI on Tuesday announced a final list of 350 players, which was later updated to 359, that will go under the hammer on December 16 in Abu Dhabi. Initially, 1390 players registered for the auction, but after discussion with the 10 franchises, it was trimmed before being made public.
The list comprises 245 Indian and 114 overseas players.
Of the 359, 244 are uncapped, including India all-rounder Vijay Shankar.
Shankar played 12 ODIs and 9 T20Is for India between March 2018 and June 2019, including at the ICC World Cup in England. So, why has he registered himself as an uncapped Indian?
It has to do with a rule IPL introduced ahead of the mega-auction last year, per which an Indian player who has not played international cricket for the last five calendar years preceding an auction will become uncapped.
“A capped Indian player will become uncapped if the player has, in the last five calendar years preceding the year in which the relevant Season is held, not played in the starting XI in International Cricket (Test match, ODI, Twenty20 International) or does not have a Central Contract with BCCI. This will be applicable for Indian Players only," states the rule.
Since the 34-year-old Shankar’s last appearance for India was in June 2019, he has, for the upcoming IPL auction, become an uncapped Indian.
Shankar’s IPL Record
Last season, Shankar represented Chennai Super Kings after being signed for Rs 1.2 crore at the mega auctions in Jeddah last year. However, he managed 118 runs from five innings at a strike-rate of 129.67 as CSK finished at the bottom of the standings. He was among the 11 players the five-time IPL champions released last month.
Overall, Shankar has represented four different franchises during his IPL career including Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Titans and CSK. He has scored 1233 runs at a strike-rate of 129.78 including seven half-centuries besides taking 9 wickets with his medium pace.
