A shooting at Bondi Beach, Australia, has left 11 dead. Authorities have designated the attack, which targeted a Jewish event, as a terrorism event.
A shooting at Bondi Beach in Australia on Sunday resulted in the deaths of at least 11 people. According to New South Wales Premier Chris Minns, the attack, carried out by two gunmen, specifically targeted a Jewish event.
Premier Minns stated in a press conference that the police are treating the incident as a "terrorism event," adding, "This attack was designed to target Sydney's Jewish community on the first day of Hanukkah."
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the shooting as an "act of evil antisemitism."
The New South Wales Police Force reported that 29 other individuals sustained injuries in the attack, including two police officers.
Police also confirmed that one suspect was killed, and a "second alleged shooter is in a critical condition," in a statement released around 9 p.m. local time.
Video footage verified by ABC News, taken at 6:42 p.m., showed hundreds of beachgoers fleeing the north side of Bondi Beach as gunfire broke out. Police stated that they received the first report of shots fired at approximately 6:45 p.m.
"The scenes in Bondi are shocking and distressing," said Prime Minister Albanese. "Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives. My thoughts are with every person affected."
In their initial social media message, police urged the public to avoid the Bondi Beach area and advised those already there to seek shelter. The statement also noted that "Two people are in police custody at Bondi Beach; however, the police operation is ongoing."
